Project 1: Anything but a Box
Reaction Paper:
My understanding of creativity is best described by the following quote stated by Edward de Bono; “There is no doubt that creativity is the most important human resource of all. Without creativity, there would be no progress, and we would be forever repeating the same patterns." Creativity is necessary for life to be interesting. Without creativity, nobody would ever come up with new ideas and everything would always stay the same. This applies to not only art, but technology, architecture, education, basically everything that is created by humans. Critical thinking and creativity go hand in hand since you need to think and brainstorm in order to come up with creative ideas that can be functional. I decided to pursue a creative career because I have always been interested in visual and performing arts. Creativity has always been a huge part of my life, so I chose to pursue a career where I can be creative and artistic all the time and design useful interiors to suit clients needs and desires.
After reading the assignment, I started brainstorming ways to deconstruct the box and create another three-dimensional form that would need all of the pieces of the box. I was really concerned about making sure I would be able to use all of the scraps of the box. To come up with ideas, I searched images on Google for any ideas I came up with to see how I could construct different objects out of the cardboard. I came up with four different ideas: a stiletto heel, a pointe ballet shoe, an abstract circular-shaped hanging piece, and an old cord phone. Thinking about these ideas, I thought that the shoes would be hard to construct since my box was made out of thick cardboard and I would have to make it curve. I also thought that it would be hard to find ways to use the scrap cardboard on the shoes. Then I thought I would do the abstract one, but I thought that would be too boring. I finally decided to do the phone because I could think of a good plan for deconstruction and reconstruction that would guarantee that I would have ways to use all of my scraps. Another reason I chose to do the phone was because I thought it would be a fun, creative design. This project was a lot of fun, and it was also a great learning experience. I learned how to use and conserve a limited amount of material, and how to not waste extra materials, but instead use them to enhance a design and make it even more interesting.

Very well articulated paper and visual documentation from sketches to deconstruction and construction process to final piece from different angles.
ReplyDeleteDespite the aspects we discuss in the critique about the “box” like shape of the "body" of the phone, through the combination of all the different elements interacting in your design, and the level of detail involved, you developed a very solid and visually interesting piece, in which the structure, mass and shape of original box was completely transformed.
